The fairway to the port of Barranquilla has a length of 22 kilometers from the mouth of the Magdalena River to the Laureano Gómez bridge, and it is the access – way to the port from the Caribbean sea.

The contract whose subject matter are the works of enhancement of the draught of the fairway to the port of Barranquilla was awarded to the Canal del Rio Consortium and it is expected that the contract be legalized to start work, with a cost of Col.$ 57.000 M, these resources have been allocated at the National Budget throughout the next three years.
The fairway to the Port of Barranquilla has a length of 22 kilometers, it is part of the Barranquilla Port Zone, where, since 1930 have been carried out chanelling works and have been built piers for the port development of the city, which have gradually fixed the banks of the river, partially controlling the natural development of the river - bed.
For the dredging of the approach channel was used mainly the motion – suction dredge “Colombia”, with a hopper capacity of 700 m3 . This dredge was operated by the company Puertos de Colombia until 1993, Ministry of Transportation until 2001 and since then by Cormagdalena (January 2 2001 until January 8 2004).
